Summary. A method is described for finding asymptotic solutions, valid for large time, of a certain class of linear, integro-differential equations which typically arise in the description of systems exhibiting heredity. The solutions are developed from a knowledge of the steady-state behaviour of the system, or more particularly of a part of the system, under harmonic excitation. The analysis is carried through for the particular case of a flexible aeroplane disturbed from steady, rectilinear flight but the main stream of the argument may be pursued independently of this physical framework. |
