dc.description.abstract Summary. Recent research into longitudinal handling problems, based mainly on work with fighter-type aircraft, is reviewed and the results discussed with a view to formulating handling criteria. Using these results as a basis, together with ad hoe data, an attempt is made to synthesise handling criteria applicable to large aircraft. Separate criteria are advanced for the \\'operational zone\\' and the landing approach. Because our knowledge of the factors involved remains rather rudimentary, the criteria proposed are incomplete and, in some areas, speculative. en_US
