dc.description.abstract Strength variability in structural materials is discussed in its relation to the assessment of safe stresses for use in design, and to the loads to be prescribed for the approval of a structural design by test. The structural penalty imposed by the latter method of approval is examined and means of reducing severity are discussed. A list is given of variability values (coefficients of variation) obtained from tests on a wide variety of aeronautical structural materials, fastenings and components. en_US
