dc.description.abstract Summary. A stress analysis has been made of inflated mobile lifting structures which are considered as membranes supporting loads attached at a seam or seams on the underside. The initial treatment discusses a structure of infinite length in which the end effects can be ignored, the ends being treated later as a body of revolution, The most efficient structure is shown to be that which encloses the load with minimum base width and height of support seam, and for any such given configuration and load, the bulk of tent material is proportional to the linear dimensions. For a given height and base, the horizontal position of the load support seam is not critical. Application to a construction with strengthening cords or inflated ribs is discussed, and some examples of practical design shapes are given. en_US
