Abstract:
It has been shown experimentally at M = 2.58 that by removing a small quantity of air from the boundary layer through fine slits in the surface of a cone the transition Reynolds number can be increased from its natural value of 2.5 x 10power6 to 9 x 10power6. The air sucked from the surface has been discharged into the cone base region and it has been shown that the measured axial force on the body at zero incidence has been reduced over the whole test Reynolds number range (2.5 - 14 x 10power6).
