Abstract:
This report investigates the extent to which the dynamic behaviour of a torpedo is sensitive to changes in its stability derivatives. The main object in carrying out the investigation was to provide guidance on the accuracy of measurement of the stability derivatives that should be necessary for any given torpedo. The considerations of the report are, however, also pertinent to the problem of deciding the effectiveness of possible changes in the design of a torpedo, the dynamic behaviour of which is unsatisfactory. Illustrative examples are worked out in detail. The report emphasises the importance of the so-called margin of stability.
